tradition

Chocolate cherries.
One of my favorite Christmas traditions.
What started as gifts for loved ones from my mom when she was newly wed and too poor to buy anything else quickly turned into a cherished family tradition.
My grandma loved them so much that she has made them nearly every year since.
Always one to include us in any project, and especially in the kitchen, (even when she had casts on both arms!) she taught my sister and I how to make them when we were very young and I can't remember ever having a Christmas without chocolate covered cherries...probably because I never have!

And so the tradition continues with the next generation;

Maraschino cherries.
I like to get these at Costco.
They offer the perfect size jars.
Two jars, about 80 cherries each.
Yes. We use both jars.
I've found this to be the perfect amount to bring to parties, give as gifts to neighbors and family and have just enough left over to enjoy throughout the holiday season.
Although, I'm waiting for Crystal to insist that 300 is the bare minimum.
True story.

Fondant.
AKA the yummy gooey filling.
One batch of fondant very nearly covers all 160 cherries.
Depending on how many cherries you devour before you cover them.(;
(we do love our cherries!)
If you are a beginner, you will not be able to cover that many.
I've discovered that beginners always use about twice the amount of fondant as the seasoned pros. (; So, plan on only using one jar of cherries per batch of fondant if you consider yourself a beginner, and you should have more than enough.

Gather your crew.
You'll want lots of helpers.
This can get tedious.
First, take a lump of (chilled!) fondant and flatten it.
Like so.
If it's too soft add some powdered sugar.

Now, taste a cherry.

Or two.

And be forewarned:

When, after 15(ish) cherries, you pull out the big guns and adamantly refuse her another,
things can turn ugly.

Now place your cherry in the center and wrap the fondant around it, like a blanket.
I like to leave the stems on.
It saves a step and makes them so much easier to dip.
(Grandma insists it can't be done.)
Plus then people know what there getting themselves into...before they take a bite.
Because after all, not everyone enjoys chocolate covered cherries.
Now roll...
I just kinda ignore the stem and it does just fine.
After you have the cherry completely covered, pinch off any excess fondant.
You'll get the hang of it.

Voila!
Okay, so this stem got a little crunched.
And it was probably the only one!

Pretty soon you'll have trays and trays of this:

Now.
I didn't photograph the dipping process.
Vat of melting chocolate, 8 helping hands, 150 cherries, + camera?
I wasn't feeling up to it at this point.
But just melt semi-sweet or milk chocolate chips, whichever you prefer.
(I actually do half and half.) with a little bit of wax.
I know! I can't believe I actually do that, but why not?
It's not like these are good for you in any way, shape or form...
The wax helps the chocolate to set up harder than it otherwise would.
I used about 4 bags of chocolate chips, but not in their entirety...as you have to melt more than you actually use to be able to dip properly. (The extra got poored over pretzels for snack time!)
Take each cherry by the stem and dip, covering about half way up the stem.
Take great care to spin off all the excess chocolate or they will puddle.
Place them on wax paper and refrigerate to cool. Store in fridge or freezer until a few days before you need to eat them...then keep them at room temp so that the fondant gets nice and gooey.
I'll post a pic of the finished cherries with the recipe tomorrow...

i love my blog

on those days when it's hard to count my blessings
when I'm weary with the pressures of life
the battle of self
and the suffocation of depression
i always find myself looking through my blog folder
fragments of a life, the one I cherish
all tucked neatly away, waiting to be rediscovered
precious moments that my soul will never forget
even after my body fails

i remember what is important
that it is not all about me
and never should be

and it's all better

today i discovered these treasures
and they made me smile

gifting

I got so many great ideas from Heidi's post that I decided to do my own!
Hope all you other Mama's join in!

Camden and Jude were my easy ones this year.
They are really entering into that big boy stage right now.
In an effort to curb their video gaming (thanks alot, Daddy and Uncle Lance!)
we are getting them this. (10% off and free shipping!)
They have an activity table (Shopko dining table with the legs cut down) in their room that we'll use during play and we'll store it under Jude's bed when not in use.
I'm really excited because I think they'll love it!

I wanted to get the girls something bigger to share and am still considering a doorway puppet theatre and puppets. I have plans to make one like this, only out of burlap or linen with silk or velvet curtains and vintage lace trims. I actually can't wait to get started on it! Does anyone know of any cute puppet resources that won't break the bank? I've scoured ebay to no avail. I like the ones at Costco, but want some more traditional fairytale themed ones. Maybe these? I love that they're handmade and don't take up much space. Puppets are so spendy!

We only get our kids one big gift and stocking stuffers, with maybe something they otherwise need thrown in for good measure.

I'll save the stuffers for another post...

What's on your Christmas gifting list?

snow MUCH fun!

Our first real sledding party with all the kids.
The last time we had this much snow most of them were still babies!

Poor Gretta wasn't so sure.
After a couple of runs she ended up in the house with Adah.
They are the best of friends and both have colds right now...
so they commiserated with each other.

Ava was so very calm and just enjoyed the ride.

Kenna is a natural at all she attempts.
Uncle Ryan gave Gwyneth the bravery award...after he dove down the driveway to save her.
She was the first little to brave the hill from the very top.
Ready to go inside...Preston, this is my favorite photo of the day!
The girl lives for fun!
Even Jude had fun...well most of the time.I have to giggle every time I look at this one!
They're a team!
Love the tongue...if you know Jude, you know this is his signature trait.
Well, maybe this is his signature trait.
Definitely his signature trait.
All smiles.
I thought he wasn't an outside boy.
Turns out he's just not a summer boy.
We can't get him to come inside since it snowed.
She is one happy girl!
Those eyes!Those eyes!!
Oh my! What's a boy to do?
They have no chance with these beck girls around!
Let's not think about that anymore...
Don't our kids have the very best uncles. EVER.
the picture of calm...
Don't our kids have the very best daddies. Ever.
Stud.
Where did the baby I used to babysit go???
Daddy is finally winning her over...

Thank you guys for coming!

We love you all so much!

(and we missed you, Caleb and Megan!)

(Sorry most of the pics don't enlarge! I'm too lazy to fix it now, but they really are better big!)
